ReplyDeleteThe Soldier of Imperial Rome
“The Roman soldiers, bred in wars alarms
Bending with just loads and heavy arms”
Cheerful their toilsome marches undergo
And pitch their tents before the foe.”
Virgils song on ancient Rome transtated by Brig Rajinder Singh Dhobi in ‘Aspect of Indian Defense’.
This work is dedicated to those servicemen of the Indian Armed Force who have served with the author in any capacity, as superior’s, colleagues, subordinates and students. Many have died doing their duty, most others have retired with very meagre recognition except perhaps a small pension or gratuity, but with the fulfillment of a job very well done. For without their whole hearted devotion, the Indian Republic would never have withstood the storms of adversity from its birth to the present day.
The Raj too was dependent on it’s soldier. As long it lasted, the life for the ranks with service however glorious was also good and great fun Kipling the poet of the Raj, tells about the English of good birth who joined the ranks just to have fun in India.
